Expressive Language Arts
The course intended to provide an overview of literature and composition, with an
emphasis on how both relate to students’ lives.
Shades of Meaning
This unit deals with meaning in literature through an examination of the
author’s use of rich, colorful language. Topics include figurative
language, diction, mood, and symbols. Students are taught how to read
closely to gain the most out of the author’s use of language.
Lesson One - Figurative Language
The lesson examines authors’ use of similes, metaphors, personification,
understatement, and hyperbole.
