Course Abstract
Incorporates experiences in investigation and experimentation
and involves solving problems that integrates the content areas.
Unit One - Population & Sample
· Helps establish a positive classroom atmosphere, introduces critical
mathematics and science concepts and gathers baseline assessment data on students.
- EALR's:
- Reading

4.2, 4.2
5.1, 5.2, 5.3
Unit Two - Big Numbers
· This unit covers place value, big numbers, estimation and computation.
- EALR's:

4.2, 4.3
5.2, 5.3
Unit Three - Fractions & Ratios
· This unit covers part-whole fractions, indicated
divisions, ratios, measurements and the name and parts of a number line.
- EALR's:

Unit Four - Division and Data
This unit extends and applies students’ knowledge of division,
measuring areas, averages (means and medians), and accuracy in
measurement and estimation. As part of the lab, Spreading Out,
students decide when it is more appropriate to use a bar graph
than a point graph.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5
2.1, 2.2, 2.3
3.2
5.3
Unit Five - Investigating Fractions
This unit connects the study of fractions with the use of data to
solve problems. Students use models for finding the common denominator
and for comparing, adding, and subtracting fractions with unlike
denominators. In the lab, A Day at the Race, students use their
knowledge to fractions to compare speeds by comparing ratios.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5
2.1
3.1
4.1, 4.2, 4.3
5.3
Unit Six - Geometry
Students draw triangles and other plane figures to discover
properties of shapes and the relationship between the sides of
a polygon and the sum of the angles. They describe and classify
shapes. They explore tessellations by using quilt designs.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.4, 1.5
2.2
3.1, 3.3
4.3
5.1, 5.3
Unit Seven - Decimals and Probability
Students learn that a quantity can be expressed as a fraction,
a decimal, and a percent. They use centiwheels (circles divided
into hundredths) and divided squares to make the connection between
fractions and decimal symbols. They use their knowledge of decimals
to explore probability in the lab, Flipping Coins.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.1, 1.4, 1.5
2.1
3.1
4.1, 4.2
