Trailblazers' Mathematics

Course Abstract
Students use complex problems to develop and master skills and concepts, use strategies and tools that make sense to them, and communicate their reasoning clearly.
Unit One - Sampling and Classifying

Students collect and organize data, graph and interpret data, and learn the vocabulary necessary for data analysis.

EALR's:
Math:
1.4.2
1.4.3
2.3
3.2
4.1
4.2
4.3
Unit Two - Strategies: An Assessment Unit

Teachers assess, formally and informally, students' abilities to use addition and subtraction fact strategies and to collect data.

EALR's:
Math: 1.1.1
1.1.2
1.1.3
1.4.2
1.4.3
Unit Three - Exploring Multiplication

Students connect multiplication word problems to multiplication number sentences as well as write and solve multiplication stories.

EALR's:
Math: 1.1.1
1.1.2
2.1
2.3
Unit Four - Place Value Concepts

Students work with place value extending to four-digit numbers in understanding our base ten number system. Base ten pieces are used as concrete models to visualize how numbers are used to represent different quantities. Students also practice writing and telling time on analog and digital clocks.

EALR's:
Math: 1.1
1.5
2.1
4.3
Unit Five - Area of Different Shapes

Students find the area of different shapes by counting the number of square centimeters. They piece together fractional parts of square centimeters into full units. In the lab, The Better Picker Upper, students find the area of irregular shapes, use adding and subtracting skills in context, and extend their knowledge of the role of fixed variable in an experiment.

EALR's:
Math: 1.1
1.2
1.3
1.4
1.5
2.3
4.1
4.2
4.3
5.3
Unit Six - More Adding and Subtracting

Students use base ten pieces and the standard algorithm with three- and four-digit addition and subtraction. They continue to develop their own strategies for adding and subtracting big numbers as they discuss and become comfortable with standard procedures. They do problem solving in context and learn about the history of our number system.

EALR's:
Math: 1.1
1.2
1.5
2.1
2.2
3.1
Unit Seven - Exploring Multiplication and Division

Students develop a conceptual understanding of multiplication and division in a problem solving setting. They begin using the division symbol. Students explore multiples of small numbers by collecting data on a point graph. They investigate the multiplicative relationship between the number of sides of a regular figure and its perimeter. They record and analyze the results of their data.

EALR's:
Math: 1.1
1.2
1.5
2.1
2.2
4.2
4.3
5.1
5.3
