Course Abstract
Using and applying mathematics in a cooperative learning
environmentWith an emphasis on conceptual math.
Unit One - Welcome to First Grade
Counting objects to 20
- EALR's:
- Math
1.1 number sense
3.1 read to learn new information
3.2 read to perform a task
Unit Two - Pennies, Packets & Parts
Partitioning numbers and counting on
- EALR's:
- Math
1.1 number sense
1.1.2 recognizes + / - symbols
3.1 read to learn new information
3.2 read to perform a task
Unit Three - Exploring Shapes
Recognizing shape in the environment
- EALR's:
- Math
1.3 geometric sense, analyzes attributes of shapes
3.1 read to learn new information
3.2 read to perform a task
Unit Four – Adding to Solve Problems
Students use manipulatives to model addition problems. They group
objects in pairs, count on, and write number sentences. Even and odd
numbers are explored. Students begin working with 2-digit numbers
in preparation for adding larger numbers.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.1 Number sense
1.1.2 Computation
Unit Five – Grouping and Counting
This unit introduces numbers to 100 for counting and grouping by
twos, fives, and tens. Students learn to name numbers in terms of
grouping, e.g. 12 as 2 sixes or 2 fives and 2. The lab, Colors,
introduces the sampling of a population.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.1 Number sense
1.1.1 Number and numeration
3.1 Analyzes information
3.2 Predicts results and makes inferences
3.3 Draws conclusions and verifies results
Unit Six – Measuring Length
Students measure with both standard and nonstandard units.
They compare and order lengths and experience the idea that
using different sized unit results in a different answer.
The skills of “skip counting” and “counting on” are applied
in the lab, Rolling Along with Links.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.2 Measurement
1.2.2 Approximation and Precision
1.2.3 Systems and Tools
Unit Seven – Patterns and Designs
Students find and build patterns in designs. They work with geometric
patterns, two-dimensional patterns, and designs that have symmetry.
Students use concrete materials that allow them to use a guess-and-check
strategy as they create, modify, and extend patterns.
- EALR's:
- Math
1.5.1 Relationships and representations
1.3 Geometric sense
1.3.1 Shape and dimension
1.3.2 Relationships and transformation
