4th Grade Science
This course has an over-arching theme of interdependence and covers
three distinct areas of science: Life Science—Watersheds and Estuaries,
Earth Science—Earthquakes and Volcanoes, and Physical Science—Hydroelectricity.
The Earth Undergoes Constant Change
The earth is moving and changing at all times.
It is building up and wearing away in a constant and ongoing process.
Lesson One - Crustal Plates
The earth’s surface is composed of rigid plates of solid material that
move on the semi-molten mantle. Earthquakes and volcanoes occur at the
boundaries between plates. New material is formed when plates spread,
allowing magma to ooze between. Plates shrink when sub-duction occurs.

Lesson Two - Acid Raid
Acid rain occurs when water combines with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
It is most often caused by automobile and industrial pollution. It wears
away the earth’s crust by breaking it down through a process known as
chemical weathering.
