Investigations in Number, Data, and Space

Course Abstract
5th Grade Investigations in Number, Data, and Space encourages students to think mathematically. Students are actively involved in mathematics content while building a framework of number sense, learning to visualize and describe geometric relationships, and learning to gather, organize, analyze, and interpret data. While working together, students investigate problems in-depth using appropriate hands-on materials and current technology. Students learn to communicate their thinking and understanding through talking, drawing, and writing
Unit One - 2-D Geometry

· Build, apply, discuss, and evaluate 2-d geometric shapes while learning their mathematical definitions of polygons.
· Analyze the properties and characteristics of polygons.
· Use coordinate grids both on and off the computer to draw polygons and analyze their properties
· Investigate constants and change when scaling up or scaling down regular polygons.
· Measure side length and angles of regular polygons and investigate patterns in sum of angles and turns.

EALR's:
Math
1.3, 2.3, 4.3, 5.3
Unit Two - Probability

· Construct likelihood line to predict the probability of an event occurring
· Correlate impossible (0), uncertain (fraction), and certain (1).
· Distinguish between probability (how often a repeatable event will occur) and prediction (whether or not an event will happen on one particular occasion).
· Compare their own predictions of a repeated event with their own and others' actual results, then apply knowledge to test their own guessing skills.
· Examine the features of "fair" and "unfair" games

EALR's:
Math
1.4, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 4.2, 4.3, 5.3
Unit Three - Estimating and Measuring

· Standard and metric tools to measure length, weight, volume, and time.
· Establish benchmarks to estimate, measure, and distinguish between the need for exact and estimate
· Error analysis.
· Compare lengths expressed in different ways

EALR's:
Math
1.2, 2.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1
